Nomad Girl, Adventures with Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, The Dalai Lama and more by Niema Ash
Niema Ash is a lucid storyteller, the writer of many books, who keeps your attention as she tells some amazing tales of episodes in her adventurous and intriguing life. She lives nowadays in Broadstairs, Kent and we see her (the Nomad Girl) during years in Montreal, travels in Morocco, and her meeting with the Dalai Lama whilst on an adventure in Tibet.
Niema evolved a music club in Montreal 'The Finjan', inviting young musicians to play and these happened to include Leonard Cohen (then 20 years old), Bob Dylan and John Lee Hooker; many found it a comfortable and friendly place in the early days of exploring their work, finding their way. The stories, and the understanding you get of Niema and her natural sense of adventure, just doing things, are beautifully told without fuss and with lots of enjoyable detail.
The book is fascinating and we enjoyed it tremendously. Here's a little of what Paul Zollo said in American Songwriter:
"Admittedly, it was the chapters on Leonard and Dylan which first brought me to this book. Both paint portraits of each man which are exceptional; showing aspects of each which are exceedingly vivid, and yet unexpected. But there is much more here, even beyond her encounters – even without legendary songwriters involved – that is every bit as vividly sensual." Read the whole article here:
Neima featured recently in the Broadstairs Beacon newspaper, with a great interview. And you can hear her talk about Nomad Girl with us on Youtube:
